Sleep Away from Home Comfortably

Slumber parties are fun. But when the TV is off and the pillow fights are done, and everyone is snoozing away, have you ever found yourself sitting in the dark at one in the morning because you can't sleep and want to go home? This is not an uncommon feeling to have. Hopefully with these tips, you can have the best sleeping over experience without worrying about being away from home.

Steps

  1. When invited to a sleep over or extended stay with friends or relatives, ask yourself first if you really want to go. Don't be afraid of hurting the feelings of the person inviting you.
  2. Discuss it with your parents/guardians. If you decide you want to try and stay the night, come up with a plan to call for a ride if you really feel that you can't make it. However, let's hope you can do it.
  3. Find out what it is that bothers you to stay overnight away from home. You may experience separation anxiety, a condition in which you do not want to be away from your parents. Or you could be worried about what is happening at home while you are away. It is helpful to try and find the source of your discomfort.
  4. On the way to the party/overnight, relax in the car going there and don't worry about what might happen later. Anticipating being upset in the middle of the night can contribute to it actually happening. Just let your mind focus on the fun you are going to have with your friend or family member. They are welcoming you into their home as their guest to have a good time.
  5. When the fun winds down, and it's time to go to sleep, try to keep your focus on the next day's events, and not on wanting to go home. If you start to get a butterfly feeling in your stomach and get upset or nervous, take deep breaths, inhaling for 4 seconds, holding it in for a second, then exhaling for 7 seconds. Repeat this until you feel relaxed.
  6. Maybe you are not tired. If there is lighting available, try reading a calming book. Practice more deep breathing.
  7. Keep your mind off of your parents. Yes, this may sound cruel, but if the reason you have trouble sleeping is because you miss your parents/guardians, try to keep your mind off of them and think about a song or favorite tv show instead.
  8. Keep reminding yourself that it is only for a few hours and that the sun will be up soon anyway. Then a new day will have begun and you made it through.
  9. Let your mind drift off slowly, do not force it to linger on thoughts. Maybe even count sheep.
  10. Avoid at first taking drugs before you go to a sleep over/overnighter. If many failed attempts result from any of the above suggestions, then maybe you can turn to over the counter medications.

How to Have Good Mental Health

So your body is fit, but there's still that piece of your mind that isn't quite right. It may be that you need to get your head on straight. It's easy to improve your mental health, and you've already taken the first step by looking into mental health. Remember, it all starts from within.

Steps

  1. Develop a hobby or passion for your mind to express its emotions and joys for the mind. For example, the body needs exercise and a means to channel its energy. This is one of the five life coping skills.
  2. Love your body, and feed your mind. Improve your social relations, and allow for more warmth and love between the people closest to you. Exercise is a coping skill.
  3. Recover old friendships, or make new true friendships to feed that part of your mind. Having good support systems from family and friends is a coping skill.
  4. Challenge yourself once in a while. Seek a meaningful job to obtain a sense of self-worth and confidence. A career that motivates you emotionally to get excited in the morning is a coping skill. However, if the job you have is not necessarily of your top career preferences, or even is flat out something you don't like, you can still deal with it. In every job there can be respect found in it by doing your best and treating those you work around with warmth. Learn to love yourself. Satisfaction in a career must come from yourself and not others.
  5. Surround yourself with beauty. Redecorate your house or garden. Do some spring cleaning. Put on some happy music. Do whatever helps you feel relaxed and at peace. Practice whatever form of spiritualism that appeals to you. This is a life coping skill and will help you recognize beauty.
  6. Remember that, as long as you fill your mind with your personal 'mental foods,' you will experience less boredom and inner conflict. Boredom and marital conflict are often symptoms of mental starvation (or misunderstanding).
  7. Be sure to identify any issues you have such as anxiety, panic attacks or other disorders. Identify these and acknowledge that you have them. Only from there can you move on and seek treatment to improve your mental health.
