Slumber parties are fun. But when the TV is off and the pillow fights are done, and everyone is snoozing away, have you ever found yourself sitting in the dark at one in the morning because you can't sleep and want to go home? This is not an uncommon feeling to have. Hopefully with these tips, you can have the best sleeping over experience without worrying about being away from home.
Steps
- When invited to a sleep over or extended stay with friends or relatives, ask yourself first if you really want to go. Don't be afraid of hurting the feelings of the person inviting you.
- Discuss it with your parents/guardians. If you decide you want to try and stay the night, come up with a plan to call for a ride if you really feel that you can't make it. However, let's hope you can do it.
- Find out what it is that bothers you to stay overnight away from home. You may experience separation anxiety, a condition in which you do not want to be away from your parents. Or you could be worried about what is happening at home while you are away. It is helpful to try and find the source of your discomfort.
- On the way to the party/overnight, relax in the car going there and don't worry about what might happen later. Anticipating being upset in the middle of the night can contribute to it actually happening. Just let your mind focus on the fun you are going to have with your friend or family member. They are welcoming you into their home as their guest to have a good time.
- When the fun winds down, and it's time to go to sleep, try to keep your focus on the next day's events, and not on wanting to go home. If you start to get a butterfly feeling in your stomach and get upset or nervous, take deep breaths, inhaling for 4 seconds, holding it in for a second, then exhaling for 7 seconds. Repeat this until you feel relaxed.
- Maybe you are not tired. If there is lighting available, try reading a calming book. Practice more deep breathing.
- Keep your mind off of your parents. Yes, this may sound cruel, but if the reason you have trouble sleeping is because you miss your parents/guardians, try to keep your mind off of them and think about a song or favorite tv show instead.
- Keep reminding yourself that it is only for a few hours and that the sun will be up soon anyway. Then a new day will have begun and you made it through.
- Let your mind drift off slowly, do not force it to linger on thoughts. Maybe even count sheep.
- Avoid at first taking drugs before you go to a sleep over/overnighter. If many failed attempts result from any of the above suggestions, then maybe you can turn to over the counter medications.
